Preparing for Interviews: Master the STAR Technique

Interviews don’t have to be stressful. With the right preparation and a clear structure, anyone can communicate their strengths confidently at any level, in any industry.

One of the simplest and most effective tools is the STAR technique, ideal for answering competency‑based questions.

S – Situation: What was happening?

T – Task: What were you responsible for?

A – Action: What did you do?

R – Result: What was the outcome?

STAR helps you stay focused, avoid waffling and will help you show a prospective employer real evidence of your skills and experience whether your examples come from work, education, volunteering, or personal projects.

A few quick tips:

  • Prepare 3–5 STAR stories in advance
  • Keep your answers clear and concise
  • Highlight what you learned
  • Show confidence, not perfection

Strong preparation + STAR = a confident, memorable interview performance.
